Shopping day @ Copenhagen - vegan fair-trade ethical

In this post I describe my one-day experience of fair trade, ethical shopping in Copenhagen and eating vegan food.

I am very confused about what my priority should be: the environmental impact of flying as a mode of transport or the great discovery of new landscapes, people and cultures to make me more open minded…

Ongoing subject for me, for this time I took a flight.
I left on Friday evening and returned Monday morning around noon.

For the hotel I looked at Veggie Hotels (https://www.veggie-hotels.com), Happycow (https://www.happycow.net/), google..... and couldn't really find one that met my criteria. As our arrival flight was late on Friday evening and the Airport hotel also looked positive, I decided to go for the Clarion Hotel® Copenhagen Airport.

This turns out to be a good choice, the hotel was great (see some more information about the book in the room), the flight eventually took quite some delay and I only arrived at the hotel around midnight. I was glad that it was only a short walk after arrival to find the bed.

On Saturday, because that’s when most shops are open, I had planned a fairtrade, ethical shopping day. I planned to do that by bike. The weather has decided otherwise, and I decided to take a subway ticket for that day.

Very directly from the hotel I took the M2 yellow line to the city centre and left for Norreport.

First breakfast at Landbageriet - Naturbageriet, Frederiksborggade 29, 1360 Copenhagen (Review over here: https://www.happycow.net/reviews/landbageriet-copenhagen-23965).

When I realized that EcoEgo wouldn't open until 11:00.

Took a longer breakfast at Souls, Noerre Farimagsgade 63 (at Frederiksborggade), Copenhagen (Review over here: https://www.happycow.net/reviews/souls-copenhagen-117770)

Walked the rest of the day, and I have to say that there were always other beautiful shops in the vicinity of these fair trade shops and those streets often had a nice atmosphere.

Passed by NiceCream Copenhagen.

ResRes, Guldbergsgade 29C, 2200 Copenhagen.

Is the best discovery and best shop I saw in Copenhagen. Very nice and passionate owner for a better world with whom I had a good conversation. The only negative point was, that he finally said that they are open all the days of the week, I went back on Sunday and that the shop was unfortunately closed.

Along K29, Kompagnistræde 29, 1208 Copenhagen, now it apparently wasn't there anymore....

I had a wonderful lunch at SimpleRaw, Grabrodretorv 9, 1154 Copenhagen (Review over here: https://www.happycow.net/reviews/simpleraw-copenhagen-59290).

Passed by Ecouture, Læderstræde 5 st. th. (in the port), 1201 Copenhagen.

Wanted to have dinner at Madenitaly, Holbergsgade 22, 1057 Copenhagen, now unfortunately on a saturday not possible without reservation.

So had a quick dinner at Two Monkeys, Gothersgade 8F, 1123 Copenhagen (Review over here: https://www.happycow.net/reviews/two-monkeys-copenhagen-159004).

I am not so much in favour of big cities and crowded places, now I have to say that I found Copenhagen very charming and a city that I very much recommend!

What can be learned from Denmark!

I am not sure whether this is completely generalised for Denmark, because I have been to various cities in Denmark, such as Skaerbaek, Kolding, Billund, Fyns Hoved, Odense, Esbjerg, Ribe... and didn't feel exactly like I was on my weekend trip to Copenhagen.

  • The people were very open, liberal, friendly and stylishly dressed.
  • The people seemed happy and the majority looked very healthy.
  • There is a very good balance between green and buildings, especially visible in a city like Copenhagen.
  • Predecessors have maximum priority and bikes have the same facilities as cars in Copenhagen.
  • Harbours, rivers, tapwater... the water in general looked very clean with people swimming regularly in them.
  • ...
Isn't this what I would like to see all over the world?

Upon arrival at the hotel, in the room there was a small book that welcomed us and of which I took the following excerpts (I took pictures of it and left it there for future readers):

At least from my point of view, I loved the approach of Copenhagen and Denmark. There was an energy I can only dream of all over the world. I conclude from this, that they have figured out much better than I have and probably a lot of other places on earth. Their politicians have made decisions that may not have made them popular in the short term, now I am sure that there are people that in the long term are very thankful for that. Politicians I can only dream of.

Let's take an example: the world would be a better place!
